Josiah Edward Spurr, a geologist, graduated from Harvard in 1893. He was a field assistant with the Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota, where he did the first rough geologic maps of the Mesabi Iron Range (1893-1894). From 1894-1896, 1898-1900, and 1902-1906, he worked for the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, Alaska, California, Nevada, and Washington.
